By the third viewing, I had an epiphany. This is brilliant. Or it could be a train wreck. I'm still not sure which yet. I guess time will tell.
What I do know is that with this trailer, in a little under three minutes, has been able to dump all my preconceived notions that I had about what Marvel's next superhero team movie would be like in the wastebasket. There was no way that I could watch this and compare this team to the Avengers. Brilliant.
Its fairly obvious that someone in the Disney/Marvel marketing department was definitely paying attention to the humor sprinkled throughout the Avengers and how positively it was received. Through the trailer they were certainly showcasing the comedic casting (the prominence of John C. Reilly guarantees that).
Comedy in a superhero movie is tricky. Without it the tone may become overly dark (yes, I'm looking at you Dark Knight Rises) and too much you get slapstick (think The Tick). Joss Whedon made it look easy in the Avengers but then again, he had years to hone his timing on Buffy and Firefly. It may have also helped that he had written comic books himself and knew exactly what the fans wanted to see.
In closing, I'm not saying that the powers that be on the Guardians can't accomplish the same deft pairing of action and comedy as the Avengers but I hope that they don't veer too far toward farce in trying to differentiate it from the Avengers.
